Misinformation on Social Media

Why is it Spread?

There are a lot of reasons misinformation is spread so much. One reason is
that social media is very hard to moniter as anyone can post anything at
anytime. Moderators can't see everything everyone has ever posted right as
it comes out, which means other people may view it and spread that mis-
information more.

Another reason is that the Coronavirus is a worldwide pandemic, so intrest
and worry for it is very high. Many people try to research the Coronavirus,
but instead find false information about it and share that with other people,
thus creating a cycle of misinformation.

A third reason misinformation is so prominant on social media is people often
tend to belive things they want to belive rather then the truth. For example,
someone who didn't want to wear masks would be more likely to belive that
masks are harmful than someone who does wear masks.

Examples of the Misinformation Spread

1. Masks don’t help slow the spread of the coronavirus

Masks actually do slow the spread of COVID-19. Many recent studies have shown
the virus is much less likely to transfer between individuals if they are
wearing masks. Not only does it block you from spreading coronavirus if you
have it, but it also will stop it from going into your body if you are wearing
and do not have the coronavirus.

2. Masks cause lung damage

It's said often that masks cause Carbon Dioxide build-up. This isn't true.
When you breath out in your mask, carbon dioxide does not get trapped and
cannot make you sick. Properly fitted masks let air flow freely while
blocking the droplets from sneezing and coughing. This means carbon dioxide
build-up is impossible.

3. Coronavirus can’t harm children

The Coronavirus can harm children, especially those with priar health
conditions, but it doesn't affect children nearlyas much as it does affect
adults. One study in France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Spain, the U.K.,
and the U.S. found that only about 1 in 260 deaths from the coronavirus are
from children, and children have been studied to contract COVID-19 less than
adults when exposed. Despite contracting it less, it is still a hazard to them.

4. Coronavirus is no worse than the flu

Coronavirus is worse and more dangerous than the flu. There is currently
no vaccine and no natural immunity so everyone is susceptible. The symptoms
generally last longer and COVID-19 spreads faster and more easily than the
flu. Coronavirus has been studied to be 10 times as deadly as the flu and
you may not get symptoms for serveral weeks.
